Choosing the Right Electric Meter Size for Your house

The appropriate electric meter size for typical household use depends on the number of household members and the number of current and future electrical appliances.

You can calculate the appropriate electric meter size for your house by dividing the wattage of the electrical appliance (watts) found on the appliance label, dividing it by the voltage (volts), and multiplying it by the number of electrical appliances. Then add all the electrical currents together and multiply by 1.25 (the amount of electrical current that may increase in the future). For example:

1. Two 75-watt pedestal fans: (75 ÷ 220) x 2 = 0.68 amps
2. Six 36-watt fluorescent light bulbs: (36 ÷ 220) x 6 = 0.98 amps
3. One 1,000-watt air conditioner: (1,000 ÷ 220) = 4.54 amps
4. One 500-watt rice cooker: (500 ÷ 220) = 2.27 amps
5. One 430-watt iron: (430 ÷ 220) = 1.95 amps
6. One 43-watt television: (1,000 ÷ 220) = 1.95 amps One appliance uses 43 ÷ 220 = 0.2 amps.
7. One 70-watt refrigerator uses 70 ÷ 220 = 0.32 amps.

The combined electrical current from all appliances is 10.94 amps. When multiplied by 1.25, this equals approximately 13.68 amps. A 5(15) meter is still acceptable, as it does not exceed 15 amps. We usually don't use many appliances at the same time. However, if the meter is insufficient in the future, especially if an additional air conditioner is installed, a larger meter must be installed for safety reasons.

Electricity Application Procedures

1. After receiving the electricity application and all supporting documents, an Electricity Authority official will inspect the building's wiring. If the electrical wiring has not yet been installed, complete the wiring and notify the official for inspection.

2. After inspecting the electrical wiring and finding it to be correct, the official will notify the applicant to pay the fees. However, if the wiring is incorrect or unsafe, the official will notify the applicant to make corrections and re-inspect. The fee will be determined by the Electricity Authority based on the type and size of the meter requested.

3. The applicant pays the fee and receives a receipt as proof of ownership.
