For those buying a house or townhouse/townhome, you may sometimes see plans for home additions or have ideas for modifying parts of the house. This leads many to want to add more usable space. However, in most housing developments, houses are designed to fit the available land area, including the proportions of usable space. Most piles used are sized to support the house as designed. Many projects do not allow for additional loads, as these factors affect the cost and price of the house.
In other words, adding more usable space to a house is illegal under the Building Control Act of 1979, which requires a permit. However, there are five exceptions to this rule:

Increasing or decreasing the total floor area of any one floor by no more than 5 square meters, and without adding or decreasing the number of columns or beams. This means that if it exceeds 5 square meters, a permit is required.
