Why is my electricity cut off?

Reasons for electricity cut off or suspension of supply:

1. Failure to pay electricity bills or other debts related to electricity usage on time.

According to the Provincial Electricity Authority regulations, each electricity billing cycle allows for payment within 21 days from the meter reading date. If this period is exceeded, officials can disconnect the electricity supply.

Electricity bill and receipt/tax invoice (purple): Electricity users receive this according to their billing cycle. Payment is due within 10 days of the due date specified on the bill.

Electricity bill reminder (blue): This is a notification for overdue electricity bills and will be sent to the user after the due date on the bill. 1. Failure to pay within 7 days.

2. Failure to provide the required additional electricity security deposit as specified by the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA).

3. Selling or illegally connecting electricity.

4. Failure to adequately maintain and ensure the safety of electrical equipment, despite a written warning from the MEA.

5. Engaging in improper electricity usage.

6. Using electrical equipment that causes interference to neighboring users.

7. Using electricity in a way that threatens national security.

8. Violating the MEA Regulations on Electricity Use and Services B.E. 2535 (1992) and its amendments (No. 2) B.E. 2538 (1995).

What happens if your electricity is cut off?

If you do not pay your electricity bill on time. When electricity supply is cut off or disconnected, users have the right to request reconnection within 1 year from the date the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) cut off the electricity supply. This is divided into 3 timeframes as follows:

1. Reconnection within 6 months:

The applicant must:

– Pay a reconnection fee.
– Provide a new electricity security deposit if they have never done so before.
– Pay for internal equipment inspection if any changes have been made.
– Pay for actual costs of electrical distribution system equipment if the MEA incurs expenses for upgrading or changing the system due to the applicant's electricity usage.
– If the electricity was cut off due to overdue bills or failure to provide an electricity security deposit, the MEA will reconnect the electricity within 1 business day.

2. Reconnection within 6 months but not exceeding 1 year:
The applicant must follow the above steps, but with the additional cost of an internal electrical equipment inspection, regardless of whether any internal electrical equipment has been changed.

3. If the electricity supply is cut off for more than 1 year:
Reconnection is not possible. If you wish to use electricity again, you must submit a new application.

Why was my water cut off?

According to the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA), if water usage is in arrears for two months, the MWA will suspend water supply. The MWA will follow MWA Regulation No. 180 regarding temporary and permanent water supply suspension for overdue water bills. This involves closing the water valve at the water meter and locking the meter with wire.

Advance notice of at least seven days will be given. Details will be recorded in a water supply suspension notice and delivered to the customer. If the customer cannot be found, the notice may be posted or placed in the mailbox, depending on the circumstances.

What to do if your water supply is cut off?

If your water supply is cut off, you can settle all outstanding debts to restore water supply. There are two cases:

1. Temporary Water Supply Suspension
This is the initial suspension, which involves closing the water valve at the water meter, sealing it with wire, scheduling a payment, or notifying the owner through other means. If all outstanding debts are settled within 15 days of the suspension, a fee of 100 baht (excluding VAT) will be charged.

2. Permanent Water Supply Suspension
There are three fee rates as follows:

- If all outstanding debts are settled more than 15 days but not more than 30 days after the temporary water supply suspension, a fee of 10% of the lump-sum cost for new water meter installation will be charged (based on meter size).

- If all outstanding debts are settled more than 30 days but not more than 180 days after the temporary water supply suspension, a fee of 20% of the lump-sum cost for new water meter installation will be charged. Based on water meter size:

- In cases where all outstanding debts are settled more than 180 days after the temporary water supply interruption, a fee equal to the lump-sum cost of reinstalling the water supply will be charged, based on the water meter size.

Note: The fee for revoking water supply interruption does not include VAT.

Will my water and electricity be cut off if I'm in a condo and have outstanding bills?

For condo residents, if you have outstanding electricity bills, the electricity authority has the right to cut off the power according to the service contract, as the electricity meter belongs to each condo owner. In the case of water, the water authority cannot cut off water to individual units because the water authority sells water to the juristic person, who then distributes it to each unit.

Can water and electricity be cut off if I don't pay common area fees?

Another case is if a condo or housing estate resident doesn't pay common area fees, can the juristic person cut off water, electricity, or restrict access to common areas? The answer is no. Such actions violate the rights of the unit or house owners to the common property. The only way for a legal entity to take legal action is through lawsuits.

However, to avoid complications, it's best to maintain discipline by paying water and electricity bills on time.
